SmartWires Launches Wi-Fi for Yacht Club in Miami
Yacht Club Installs SmartWires Wireless Broadband Internet Service to Benefit its Members and Marina Visitors.
Miami, Florida, January 29, 2004- SmartWires, a Miami-based broadband wireless service provider and Wi-Fi network integrator, launched its services for a private yacht club in Key Biscayne, near Miami, this week. The yacht club, which has 800 members and 100 slips in its marina, installed the service to allow its members to access the Internet from anywhere on the club property using the latest in wireless technology.
“We realize that many of our members use the club for various activities,” stated Donald P. Emery, Chief Operating Officer of the yacht club. “Traditionally, it has been difficult and costly for our members, particularly those that visit on their boats in the marina, to get good quality, high-speed access to the Internet. Our members are really pleased that we made these services available.”
SmartWires has deployed its wireless network using SmartBridges access points and the AirLok Wireless Infrastructure Appliance developed by another Miami-based company, Lok Technology. The AirLok appliance manages the entire wireless network in terms of authentication, billing, routing and bandwidth management. Unlike many Wi-Fi configurations, the AirLok also provides one of the most secure wireless computing environments. The SmartWires network, operating on the AirLok Model 300, can support 10,000 users and up to 100 concurrent users, making it possible for SmartWires to expand its network throughout Key Biscayne and neighboring communities if service is requested.
Ed & Betty Jo Chipman, members of the yacht club asked SmartWires to configure a wireless network on their trawler. “The minute we heard the yacht club was offering Wi-Fi, we asked SmartWires to design our own ‘on-board’ local area network. Now we can transfer files between our computers and access the Internet from anywhere on our boat or in the club. We can not imagine going back to our old dial-up Internet connection.”
SmartWires is currently deploying Wi-Fi networks throughout South Florida, other parts of the US and internationally.
